This is the first video that I have watched that I was absolutely appauled by its content, especially for 5 year olds and under. We began the first 3 years of our childs life with storybooks. Now we have begun viewing some of the videos from the books we have read. The Disney movies stay pretty true to the text in the books. I was amazed at how different The Land Before Time video was from the book. The video contained a lot of prejudice, sarcastic remarks from the adult dinosaurs and the young dinosaurs, in which young children viewing this video should not be hearing (they mimic what they hear, proven fact) Even as I sat and watched the video (which I always do, to explain the conflicts) it was hard keeping up with all the negative, violent scenes. People wonder why children talk and act the way they do…..This video is a prime example. I will be the first to champion that it is parents responsibility to teach their kids right from wrong, empathy, respect, and kindness. But videos like this one (which I am sure, some parents think can run unsupervised), is a big mistake. I will not recommend any of these videos to any of my friends. Very disappointed…I only give it 1 star, because the only redeeming character is Duckie.

Those who like this DVD seem to have fallen in love with the movie years ago when it was first released in theaters.
We, on the other hand, first discovered the many sequels and then watched this disappointing original. The problem is that they are nothing alike. The sequels are bright, lively, sing-along affairs. The original is somewhat dark and brooding.
If you have a toddler who likes the lively sequels, you can skip this one. Don’t let the Spielberg-Lucas names fool you into thinking this will be even better. It’s not better, just very different
How does the movie rate on it’s own merits? Enjoyable, if you’re not a 2-year old looking for singing dinosaurs. And if you’re not, there are still shortcomings. The overall look of the DVD release seems dirty and old. The instrumental score is melodramatic, and the animation is a bit cliche’: the kids are lost in a world full of shadows and thorns, shadows and thorns. Yuck!

I know alot of people think this is the best one out of all of them, but I think this is too intense, and Little Foot seems snobby in this sequil. I am glad they made more of these movies. (…)I know there are many other older people who love the series.

Even though I know this is an older animated feature, I was frankly shocked how poor the animation looked. It looked like it would have been decent animation, definitely without the detail of some movies, but it was so grainy and not crisp at all– so I blame the DVD, because I’ve seen other Bluth films with animation that blew me away. So this movie’s animation looks much older than it is with all the graininess. I should have listened to others’ reviews that said this was a very poor quality release of a film they love. It was also dull because of so much brown, orange and yellow due to the land they traveled. Not very appealing to the eye.
But the story is more important than the look, and I found that heavy. They tried to lighten it up, but really, it was a downer. There was a violent scene early on in the film, and the mom died. How sad for her son to see this and have to travel on his own until he met some young friends. It was sad and not uplifting even when they finally reached their goal in the end after such a long journey. I know the lesson is perseverance, but I’d prefer action mixed in with some more fun, too.
Too dull to show my kids if it were up to me… too bad I purchased it before just renting to check it out.
