I blindly purchased the first two seasons of Metalocalypse after becoming obsessed with The Dethalbum (Deluxe Edition) (2CD). The music is great, so I figured that I would check out where it came from. The show is basically about how the world revolves around the greatest metal band of all time, Dethklok, and how a shadow-government is trying to guide the course of the apocalypse – which is directly influenced by Dethklok. It took me about two episodes (actually the first two episodes of the first season) to get into the entire series. Brendan Small, the show’s creator, has done the world a wonderful service with Metalocalypse. Also recommended is Dethalbum II Deluxe Version (CD + DVD).

My husband and I bought this for each other for our wedding anniversary. We can’t get enough of them. Any fan of Metalocalypse should have these DVDs, especially for the bonus content. That alone makes these DVDs worth their price!

This TV series isn’t going to please everyone, and it’s not supposed to. Everything about this show is over-the-top and ridiculous, just like the genre of heavy metal is supposed to be, and only those who truly love and appreciate the art form that is heavy metal music will appreciate and understand the macabre type of humor that is emitted through the excessive violent imagery portrayed (in a humorous fashion) in this show. In other words, don’t take it all too seriously. Alot of what goes on in this show is supposed to be so shocking that it is funny, and the fact that it is a cartoon helps with that. Beyond all that, this show is an intelligent satire on the excesses of celebrity life, the psychology of individuals (particularly celebrities) and why they do what they do, human stupidity (or celebrity stupidity, whichever), and the back and forth between different forces competing for power, a theme that is a core part of human nature on any level and that has existed since the dawn of time. Also, he DVD itself contains an impressive amount of bonus features I found highly entertaining and that will definitely please true Metalocalypse/Dethklok fans. Other people probably won’t get the humor.
